V angličtine sa pre príbor bežne používa termín knife and fork naɪf ənd foːk (teda nôž a vidlička). Napr.: How to use a knife and fork - Ako používať príbor. Môžete sa stretnúť aj so slovom cutlery ˈkʌtlərɪ, ten ale zvyčajne súhrnne označuje príbory.

Pub je hlavne britská krčma. V USA narazíte skôr na bar bɑː alebo saloon səˈluːn, kde sa pivo čapuje do menších pohárov (ca 2-3 dl). Na stôl môžete bežne dostať pivo v sklenenom džbáne - pitcher ˈpɪtʃə (cca 1,5-2l), z ktorého si sám nalievate.

Vyberte správne slovo podľa výkladu.

Termín junk food možno voľne slovensky preložiť ako “nezdravá strava”, ale ide hlavne o kalorické jedlá s vysokým obsahom tuku a cukrov a nízkou nutričnou hodnotou, typicky priemyselne spracované, ako sú čipsy, sladkosti, vyprážané pokrmy z fastfoodových reštaurácií ap. Junk totiž znamená haraburdie či prenesene odpad.

Všimnite si, že would rather sa používa, ak niekto vyjadruje svoju osobnú preferenciu. Naopak had better je skôr vyjadrenie všeobecného odporúčania, čo by mal niekto radšej urobiť vzhľadom na okolnosti. Je teda významovo blízke použitiu anglického should.

Doplňte had better, would rather, would like či would hate.

Calm down - (upokojiť) patrí medzi oddeliteľné frázové sloveso - separable phrasal verb. Vyznačujú sa tým, že sa priamy predmet (často zámeno) vo vete vkladá medzi sloveso a predložkovú časticu tvoriace frázové sloveso. Napr.: Try to CALM him DOWN. - Pokús sa ho upokojiť. ap. Viac o frázových slovesách pozri lekcia 12.

Hoci food, meal aj dish možno po slovensky preložiť ako jedlo, nie je to to isté! Food sú potraviny všeobecne (čokoľvek čo sa dá jesť). Meal je udalosť (prijímanie potravy) aj prijímané pokrmy. Dish je potom jeden konkrétny podávaný pokrm. Napr. Supper is an evening meal., ale My favourite dish is pizza. - “Moje obľúbené jedlo je pizza.”

Lunch lʌntʃ - obed, býva skôr ľahšie jedlo (v práci ap.). Hlavné jedlo dňa v anglicky hovoriacich krajinách je dinner ˈdɪnə - najčastejšie popoludní (po práci ap.). Pre nás to teda môže byť skorá večera. Neskorej či druhej večeri sa potom hovorí supper ˈsʌpə.
