Where do you live? Do you have a flat or a house?
Kde bývaš? Máš byt alebo dom?
►
We live in a small family house outside the city. We bought it some 10 years ago. We had to take out a mortgage for that, but we're happy to have a home of our own. We enjoy outdoor activities that you can do in the garden such as barbecues, sunbathing, playing games with the kids etc. We also have a small pool.

But there must also be a lot of work around the house like cleaning, gardening and so on. Am I right?
►
Of course there is, above all during summer and autumn. For example mowing the lawn takes a lot of time. I quite hate it but it needs to be done. My wife, on the other hand, loves gardening. The house also requires repairs from time to time. But I still think there are more advantages than disadvantages of owning a house. We also have great neighbours who often join us for barbecues.

And how do you deal with commuting to work? How long does it take you?
Ako riešiš dochádzanie do práce? Koľko času ti to zaberie?
►
Well I have to drive some 15 miles to work and 15 miles back which takes me about an hour every day when there are no traffic jams. But I got used to it and I think it's worth it, although we have to spend a little more money on petrol. And my wife works part-time from home, so she doesn't need to worry about that. When the kids start going to school, we'll have to buy another car for my wife to take them there. But everything comes with a price, you know.
No, každý deň musím jazdiť do práce autom 15 míľ tam a 15 míľ naspäť, čo mi zaberie asi hodinu denne, keď nie sú zápchy. Až začnú deti chodiť do školy, budeme musieť kúpiť ďalšie auto, aby ich tam manželka mohla voziť. Ale všetko skrátka niečo stojí.

What about you? Do you rent or own your own home?
A čo ty? Bývaš v podnájme alebo vo vlastnom?
►
We lived in lodgings for two years and now we rent a small one-bedroom flat on the 4th floor in the city centre. It's in a good neighbourhood and it's a quiet street with little traffic. We even have a balcony with a nice view of the city. I work nearby, so I can walk to work in about 10 minutes. However, there's no lift, so we have to take the stairs. But we don't mind that as we're young and childless.
►
So you're quite happy there. How long have you lived there?
Takže ste tam celkom spokojní. Ako dlho už tam bývate?
►
We've lived there for about 5 years now, but we're also considering buying a home of our own. We're thinking of buying a bigger flat in the suburbs. The rent has been going up and it's quite high in the cities now. Our landlord has increased the rent by 20 per cent and the utility costs have gone up too.
►
Yes, rents are really expensive in some cities these days. Some people can hardly afford to rent a flat in the city, so they take out a mortgage instead.
Áno, nájomné je v niektorých častiach mesta skutočne vysoké. Niektorí ľudia si môžu sotva dovoliť prenajať si v meste byt, a preto si radšej vezmú hypotéku.
►
But some people find it hard to even think about taking out a mortgage, owing a lot of money and repaying it for such a long time, so they prefer paying the rent instead. And there's also some risk. If you lose your job and can't afford to repay your mortgage, you can lose your home.
Ak prídeš o prácu a nemôžeš hypotéku splácať, môžeš prísť o strechu nad hlavou.
►
Yes, you're right, but if you want to start a family, you can't live in lodgings or in a small flat forever. Children need some space of their own.
►
That's why I think the best thing is to save some money first and then take out a mortgage and buy your own home if you have to.
Preto si myslím, že najlepšie je našetriť najskôr peniaze, vziať si hypotéku a potom si kúpiť vlastné bývanie, keď už to musí byť.
Narrator:
Mrs Johnson, why did you decide to move into a house?
Mrs Johnson:
Well, we'd always wanted to own a house, to have a home of our own with a garden or at least a big backyard for the kids to play in. But we just couldn't afford it before. The prices of houses here were really high before. And we didn't want to have a huge mortgage. So we decided to live in an apartment for a few years and save some more money first. And then when the house prices went down in the US we thought it was the right time to get a new house.
Narrator:
I see. And why did you have your house built instead of just buying one? There are lots of houses available for sale now.
Mrs Johnson:
There were two main reasons why we decided to have a new house built rather than to buy one. First, we wanted to have a house built according to our needs and taste. We didn't like any of the houses offered for sale. And second, we didn't want to use a realtor when buying a house as it often makes things even more expensive.
Narrator:
Please, can you describe your house to us in more detail?
Mrs Johnson:
Okay. Let me give you a tour of the house. It's a two-storey house with 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and there's a garage for 2 cars.
Narrator:
Is there a basement and attic too?
Mrs Johnson:
There's no attic but we have a big basement. My husband wanted that. It offers a lot of space for storing things and there's also a room for my husband's DIY. He likes to make and repair things.
Narrator:
What's on the first floor?
Mrs Johnson:
Downstairs, there's a spacious living room with a lounge suite and a fireplace and a small guest bedroom next to it. There's also a bathroom and a big kitchen with a dining table and chairs for 8 people. I enjoy cooking and we often have guests for dinner.
Narrator:
So there must be 3 bedrooms on the second floor.
Mrs Johnson:
Exactly. Upstairs, there's one bigger bedroom with a double bed where my husband and I sleep. There's also a desk so we can work there. This bedroom also has a small balcony. And the two remaining bedrooms serve as our children's rooms. We only have one child so far, but we're planning to have another one.
Narrator:
That sounds like a great plan. Do you have a garden for the children to play in as well?
Mrs Johnson:
Well there's a large backyard with a high fence around it and a small front yard too but we don't have a really big garden. Land in the suburbs is quite expensive and we also spent a lot on furniture so we had to make a compromise there. And besides, maintaining a garden takes a lot of time. Maybe it's better this way.
Narrator:
So it looks like a nice spacious house for a family of four. We hope that you have a great time living there together.
